The Blue Hole in the Maldives
When the last ice age arrived and huge volumes of Earth’s oceans were frozen into polar caps, sea levels around the world fell. Coral reefs and limestone rocks were exposed and began to erode. Eventually, as the elements did their gradual steady work, sections collapsed to form sinkholes. Millennia later, when the ice age ended and meltwater re-filled the oceans, these holes flooded to create incredible underwater chimneys which now appear cerulean blue from above.
Today, these unique reef formations provide cave-like sanctuaries protecting coral and other sea life from the surrounding ocean. With calm waters, abundant ecosystems and ancient fossils they are a paradise for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts.
