Hiking in Tanzania : Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano

Lengai Volcano climbing is not for the weak of heart. The still-active volcano, which is accessible from camps around the borders of Lake Natron, is known as the “Mountain of God” because locals believed that the rumbling they heard from within was the sound of God.

To ensure that there is a good probability of clear skies in the morning, check the weather and cloud conditions with your guide the night before.

With the goal of using head torches to climb and reaching the summit in time to witness a spectacular sunrise, the trip typically begins at midnight. The five to six-hour journey is strenuous and nearly entirely uphill, along a trail that alternates between crumbly rock and deep sand.
