Zanzibar’s Bawe Island Sets New Standard in Luxury and Marine Conservation
Zanzibar has taken a major step toward marine conservation with the establishment of the Changuu-Bawe Marine Conservation Area, a protected zone surrounding Bawe Island. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the Zanzibar government and Bawe Island by The Cocoon Collection, aims to preserve the island’s vibrant coral reef and marine biodiversity by prohibiting fishing in the area, allowing marine life to thrive.
Located just 15 minutes from Stone Town, Bawe Island is home to a 5-star private resort offering 70 luxury villas, each with a private garden, pool, and personal butler service. Despite its exclusivity, the resort is committed to eco-friendly practices, including Zanzibar’s largest solar plant, water desalination, and wastewater recycling. It also contributes to the protection of century-old turtles on Prison Island.
Beyond environmental efforts, the project also focuses on supporting local communities. The initiative includes the construction of modern homes for fishermen, equipped with private boat docks to facilitate sustainable fishing practices outside the protected area. This balance between luxury tourism and conservation sets a new benchmark for responsible travel, proving that high-end hospitality and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
