Indian Ocean at the Heart of Regional Cooperation: 5th Summit of Heads of State of the IOC in Antananarivo
On April 24, 2025, the Malagasy capital Antananarivo is hosting the 5th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), marking ten years since the last high-level meeting in Moroni in 2014.
Organized by the Government of the Republic of Madagascar, this summit brings together top leaders from the Comoros, France (Reunion Island), Mauritius, and the Seychelles, alongside the Secretary General of the IOC and around thirty delegations from partner countries and observer organizations.
This high-level gathering highlights the growing importance of the Indian Ocean as a strategic, ecological, and economic space. Key topics include maritime security, sustainable management of natural resources, combating the effects of climate change, and strengthening regional cooperation in areas such as health, education, and economic development.
The summit also serves as a platform for regional solidarity, emphasizing the interdependence of the islands and territories of the Indian Ocean in facing shared challenges. It reaffirms the commitment of IOC member states to work together toward a more resilient, prosperous, and inclusive future in this region, rich in cultural and environmental diversity.
