IUCN has launched 11 new SOS Lemurs Phase II projects in Madagascar
Conservationists, government representatives, and civil society organizations gathered at Panorama Andrainarivo, Madagascar, to celebrate the launch of the first projects selected under SOS Lemurs Phase II, a conservation initiative dedicated to protecting Madagascar’s iconic and critically endangered primates.
Since its launch in 2017, the SOS Lemurs initiative, part of IUCN’s Save Our Species grant program, has played a vital role in funding field conservation efforts across Madagascar. During its first phase (2017–2023), the initiative supported 49 projects, contributing to the protection of 63 lemur species in priority conservation areas. With Phase II officially underway, the initiative is now strengthening its efforts through 2029 to ensure the sustainability of lemur conservation efforts. Eleven projects have been selected to receive major grants to support their critical actions: protecting endangered lemur species, restoring habitats, mobilizing local communities, and strengthening scientific research.
