Oman Unveils Ancient Rock Art in Sohar
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Oman has announced the discovery of remarkable rock drawings and carvings in the Tabq area of Wadi Al Lajam, in Sohar (North Al Batinah Governorate). Spread across both sides of the valley, the artworks depict cows, bulls, camels, horses, mountain goats, ibexes, and even what is believed to be the Arabian leopard, offering rare insight into the fauna that once roamed the mountains of Oman.
Alongside depictions of humans and geometric symbols, the site also contains Arabic inscriptions and camel drawings from the Islamic period, highlighting the valley’s enduring role as a canvas for cultural expression across centuries.
The Ministry emphasized that this discovery represents a valuable scientific and cultural addition for Oman, and strengthens the case for continued documentation and preservation. Protecting this heritage from erosion and natural factors is seen as essential not only for research, but also for sustainable cultural tourism, positioning Oman as a destination where history, heritage, and nature are preserved and shared with the world.
