Efkays Triumphs at the Pirogue Marlin World Cup in Mauritius
Set in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Pirogue Marlin World Cup has made a remarkable return in Mauritius, crowned this year by Team Efkays. Competing in one of the world’s most renowned big-game fishing grounds, the victory carried strong emotional meaning for the winning captain, who shared the moment with close friends from India and long-standing ties to the island he considers a second home.
Fishing in the open waters of the Indian Ocean proved demanding, especially during the final days when rough seas challenged even the most experienced crews. Using 50-pound lines, landing powerful marlins required precision, endurance, and calm under pressure. While skill was essential, the Efkays captain acknowledged that luck — an inseparable part of offshore fishing — also played its role.
Having started fishing as a child in India, the champion later turned to deep-sea fishing across the Indian Ocean and beyond, traveling from the Andaman Islands to Australia, Thailand, and the Azores. Yet Mauritius remains central to his journey, a place he has returned to for more than a decade, drawn by both the richness of its marine ecosystem and the strong bonds within its fishing community.
Beyond competition, the relaunch of the Pirogue Marlin World Cup carried a deeper message. During the closing ceremony at La Pirogue, organizer Clency Romeo emphasized respect — for fellow anglers, for teamwork, and above all for the Indian Ocean itself — as the true spirit of the event.
With multiple marlins caught and international teams praising the level of competition, the tournament once again showcased the Indian Ocean as a premier destination for sport fishing. Efkays’ triumph now stands as a symbol of excellence, passion, and shared respect for one of the planet’s most powerful and captivating oceans.
