Grant Opportunity: Updating the Ecosystem Profile for the Madagascar and Indian Ocean Islands Biodiversity Hotspot

The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) has launched a strategic grant call to support the update of the Ecosystem Profile for the Madagascar and the Indian Ocean Islands Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the world’s most ecologically rich and climate-vulnerable regions. Open to applicants from all countries, this opportunity offers funding of up to USD 150,000 to lead a comprehensive research and planning process aimed at guiding future conservation investments.

The call officially opened on 19 December 2025 and will close on 26 January 2026 at 18:00 (Washington, D.C. time). CEPF is seeking one or more qualified organizations to update the ecosystem profile with a strong focus on identifying and prioritizing Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) actions led by civil society across Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles.

The assignment involves biodiversity data analysis, climate vulnerability assessment and extensive stakeholder consultations, covering terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems. The resulting ecosystem profile will serve as a key strategic document to strengthen climate resilience, support sustainable livelihoods and guide long-term conservation planning in the Indian Ocean region.

Eligible applicants include NGOs, academic and research institutions, private consultancies or multinational consortia with proven regional experience in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem assessment and stakeholder engagement. Proposals must be submitted by email to cepf@cepf.net, in accordance with the official request for proposals document published by CEPF.
