Through Elijah Gowin’s photography, the Robert Mann Gallery’s show Spirit and Shadow offers a contemplative investigation of light, time, and the natural world. The show highlights fleeting occurrences with a serene, even poetic intensity by contrasting drifting snowflakes with firefly over rivers. Gowin traveled to Virginia, Malaysia, and Thailand to capture these ephemeral moments. His photographs turn ordinary, brief occurrences into illuminating experiences that stay with the spectator. The pictures invite contemplation on perception, memory, and the delicate passage of time by blurring foreground and background through careful composition and slight light manipulation. Viewers are prompted to stop and focus on the delicate, radiant presence of nature’s smallest marvels by the overall immersive rather than linear effect.
