Discover Africa in Sharjah: South Africa, Zanzibar and Ethiopia Take Centre Stage

From 14 to 18 January 2026, Sharjah invites visitors to embark on a cultural journey across Africa at the Sharjah Festival of African Literature (SFAL), held at University City Hall Square in the UAE. Organised by the Sharjah Book Authority, this vibrant festival blends literature, music, crafts and cuisine under the theme “The African Way.”

This year, the spotlight shines on South Africa and Zanzibar, with additional cultural expressions from Ethiopia, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the diversity of African traditions in one destination. Through storytelling, poetry and live performances, the festival reveals how African cultures express identity, memory and heritage across generations.

SFAL is designed as an immersive cultural experience for all ages. Visitors can take part in hands-on workshops led by African artists, including traditional Swahili weaving, visual storytelling inspired by Zanzibar’s heritage, and indigenous craft sessions showcasing South Africa’s Khoe and San artistic traditions.

The atmosphere comes alive with music and dance performances from Zanzibar, Ethiopia and South Africa, alongside Afro-pop shows that transform the festival into a lively celebration of rhythm and movement. Daily poetry readings and storytelling sessions add moments of reflection and connection, while children’s workshops make the experience accessible for families.

Culture can also be tasted and explored through live cookery sessions, art exhibitions and a cultural market featuring handcrafted jewellery, textiles and artisanal products. Emirati crafts are showcased alongside African creations, offering visitors a powerful example of cross-cultural exchange.

Building on the success of previous editions, the Sharjah Festival of African Literature has become a must-visit event for travellers seeking authentic cultural encounters. With South Africa, Zanzibar and Ethiopia at the heart of this year’s programme, Sharjah positions itself as a gateway to African culture in the Arab world.
