Australia in the Spotlight on France 5: A Journey Along the West Coast
On January 17, Australia took center stage on French television with a new episode of the popular travel program Echappées Belles, broadcast on France 5 and now available on replay. For the seventh time, the iconic show returned to Australia, this time focusing on an immersive road trip across Western Australia.
The 90-minute documentary titled “On the Road by Van on the West Coast” invites viewers to discover one of Australia’s most remote and spectacular regions. From the tropical landscapes of the Kimberley in the north to the dramatic cliffs of Cape Leeuwin in the south, the episode showcases a rich blend of nature, culture, gastronomy and human encounters.
Perth and its Surroundings
The journey begins in Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The program highlights local perspectives through residents such as Kate Gibson from Hike Collective, who introduces the charming port town of Fremantle and Rottnest Island, home to the famous quokkas. Another local voice, Manon, a French expatriate, shares her favorite hidden spots around the city.
Nearby, the team explores the surreal desert of the Pinnacles alongside scientists, offering insights into its unique geological formations. The adventure continues with a hot air balloon flight over Avon Valley and a deeper look into Aboriginal culture in Swan Valley, guided by Dale Tilbrook.
From Margaret River to Cape Leeuwin
Heading south, the episode focuses on Margaret River, a region known for its wines and culinary creativity. Chef Paul “Yoda” Iskov introduces traditional bush ingredients with Iszaac Webb, cultural custodian of Wadandi Boodja. Together with local fishermen and winemakers, they prepare a gastronomic experience near the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet.
A French perspective is also brought by photographer Martine Perret, who has lived in the region for over a decade. Through her lens, viewers meet Aboriginal elders Viviane Brockman and Mitchella Hutchins and discover the sacred site of Canal Rocks.
The Wild North: The Kimberley
The final stage takes viewers to the Kimberley, one of Australia’s most untouched regions. Starting from Broome, the team visits a pearl farm at Cygnet Bay, explores mangrove ecosystems, and shares daily life with a farming family at Barn Hill Station.
This episode of Echappées Belles offers an inspiring portrait of Western Australia — a land of vast landscapes, ancient cultures and unforgettable encounters — and remains available for viewers on replay.
