The Australian Ocean-Gothic genre is investigated through the practice of seven artists based in Western Australia, who look to the Indian Ocean and its coastal spaces for provocation.
Each artist’s practice looks to tease out, subvert or query the real and imagined precarious beauty, historical significance and metaphorical symbolism of the Indian Ocean, as ‘Codes in Parallel’ prompts ideas of longitude and latitudes of oceanic journey and coastal geographies of WA.
Engaging with archival materials from the WA Maritime Museum, Gothic Literature and contemporary cultural concerns, the artists make inquiry via new significant artwork and installations across a range of mediums. Each artist has engaged with artisan and craft practices’ during their career and aim to advance this focus for the Craft Triennial.
