Blue Voices 2026: Zanzibar Advancing Responsible Ocean Governance and Sustainable Tourism

From 26 to 28 January 2026, Zanzibar will host the Blue Voices Regional Summit, a landmark gathering that places the ocean at the heart of economic strategy, regional cooperation and sustainable development in the South West Indian Ocean. More than a policy forum, the summit promotes a shared vision of the ocean as a living economic system — one whose health directly shapes livelihoods, food security and the future of responsible tourism across the region.

Under the theme “One Ocean, One Voice,” the summit brings together governments, civil society and regional partners to address one of the most pressing challenges facing coastal nations: illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. These practices undermine marine ecosystems, weaken coastal economies and threaten the long-term viability of tourism destinations that depend on healthy seas, vibrant reefs and sustainable fisheries. By strengthening regional coordination and governance, Zanzibar aims to help turn the blue economy into a driver of resilience, inclusive growth and environmental stewardship.

For Zanzibar and its neighbours, ocean governance is inseparable from tourism sustainability. Well-managed waters support artisanal fishing communities, protect biodiversity hotspots, and preserve the natural assets that attract visitors from around the world. The summit emphasizes practical cooperation — shared data, aligned regulations and effective monitoring — recognizing that marine ecosystems transcend borders and require collective solutions.

Equally important is the summit’s focus on African-led leadership. By empowering regional institutions and local stakeholders, Blue Voices 2026 reinforces the idea that sustainable ocean management must be rooted in local realities, cultural knowledge and shared responsibility. This approach strengthens not only conservation outcomes but also economic confidence, encouraging responsible investment in tourism, fisheries and maritime services.

Ultimately, Blue Voices 2026 reflects a growing understanding that responsible tourism and sustainable ocean economies go hand in hand. Healthy marine ecosystems mean thriving coastal destinations, secure livelihoods and meaningful travel experiences that benefit both visitors and host communities.
