South Africa: Blyde River canyon

Usually, travelers arrive directly from Johannesburg airport. A four-hour drive will take you to Blyde River Canyon. This is also the gateway to Kruger Park. So, this is a pleasant—what am I saying?—essential stopover if you’re heading off on a Kruger safari. In our case, we chose to finish at Blyde River Canyon before flying back to Johannesburg. Most travelers spend a day at Blyde River Canyon. If you’re in a hurry, it’s entirely possible to see the essentials by staying a night and a full day.

If you have more time, we recommend staying two or even three days to enjoy the beauty of the place, without rushing. You can also add to your itinerary the amazing village of Pilgrim Rest, which marked the history of the gold rush in South Africa.
