Borneo elephant, Asia’s smallest, listed as endangered
The Borneo elephant, Asia’s smallest, has been added to the endangered species list by a global conservation authority that has counted only about 1,000 individuals in the wild.
“The population has declined over the past 75 years, due to intensive logging of Borneo’s forests that is destroying most of the Borneo elephant habitat,” the IUCN said in an update to its “Red List” on Thursday. The organization warns that continued destruction of elephant habitat, particularly from palm oil cultivation, as well as timber plantations and mining, is further threatening the species.
