Discover Balèn: La Réunion’s Future Hub for Whale Conservation and Ocean Knowledge
La Réunion is home to one of the Indian Ocean’s most remarkable natural treasures: its whales and dolphins. Yet despite hosting 25 species of cetaceans and serving as a major breeding ground for Southern Hemisphere humpback whales, the island still lacks a dedicated place to share scientific knowledge and inspire conservation.
The Balèn Project, led by GLOBICE, aims to change that. This visionary initiative seeks to create a unique space where science, community, and discovery meet — a living hub that blends marine research, immersive experiences, and public engagement. Designed as a human-scale, innovative third-place rather than a traditional museum, Balèn will bring researchers and visitors together, spark curiosity about marine life, and strengthen La Réunion’s connection to its ocean heritage.
With research facilities, interactive learning spaces, and vibrant community events, the Balèn Project hopes to make whale conservation a shared mission — and to anchor La Réunion as a leading center for cetacean knowledge in the Indian Ocean.
