FAGNAKO: An Agroforestry and Biofuel Project Supporting Sustainable Development in Madagascar
Launched in May 2023 by Canopy Energies, the Fagnako agroforestry project aims to restore 10,500 hectares of degraded land in eastern Madagascar through the planting of 4 million Pongamia trees, alongside forage and fruit species. A key milestone has already been achieved, with one million trees planted.
Madagascar, home to exceptional biodiversity with 90% endemic plant species, has lost 44% of its forest cover in the past 60 years. Fagnako addresses this challenge through a diversified agroforestry system that restores soils, enhances biodiversity, and will sequester over 2.5 million tons of CO₂ equivalent over 30 years.
The project also generates strong social and economic benefits, creating 300 permanent jobs and 3,000 seasonal jobs, while developing local value chains through Pongamia by-products, including a non-edible vegetable oil used as renewable biofuel. This biofuel offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels widely used in rural households.
By combining reforestation, renewable energy, and community development, Fagnako contributes to climate action while supporting responsible tourism. By preserving landscapes and strengthening local livelihoods, the project helps protect the natural and cultural heritage that makes Madagascar a unique and sustainable destination.
Certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Fagnako represents an integrated model for environmental restoration and long-term regional development.
