Fighting Marine Plastic Pollution in Malaysia: MRF’s Ongoing Ocean Cleanup Initiative

Since 2022, the Marine Research Foundation (MRF) has been leading a major initiative to combat marine plastic pollution in Malaysian waters. In partnership with The SeaCleaners Switzerland and Kota Kinabalu City Hall, the project focuses on cleaning and reducing plastic waste that threatens marine ecosystems and human health.

Every year, over 14 million tons of plastic enter the oceans, breaking down into microplastics that contaminate marine life. To address this urgent issue, MRF operates the Mobula 8, a French-designed cleanup vessel hosted at Gaya Island Resort. In just its first week, the boat collected over one ton of marine plastics, showing the impact of coordinated local action.

Beyond cleanup, the initiative promotes awareness, responsible waste management, and stronger environmental practices — part of MRF’s long-term mission to protect ocean biodiversity and build a sustainable, plastic-free future.

Join the movement. Protect our oceans. Be part of the solution.
