India is set to become the first country in the Indian Ocean region to have over 100 tsunami-ready villages, a milestone aimed at strengthening coastal disaster preparedness. Certified under UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), these villages meet strict criteria including public awareness of tsunami risks, hazard mapping, clearly marked evacuation routes, 24-hour warning systems, and regular mock drills.
