Irakam Island: The South Indian Sanctuary Leading a New Wave of Responsible Tourism

Nestled in the serene waters of Pulicat Lake in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati district, Irakam Island is poised to become one of India’s most inspiring examples of sustainable tourism.

With over 18 acres of natural beauty and biodiversity — particularly known for attracting migratory flamingos — this tranquil destination is undergoing a thoughtful transformation that fuses ecological protection with inclusive development.

Driven by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC), the initiative takes cues from low-impact tourism models like Konaseema. The plan is multifaceted: eco-friendly cottages (three already built), speedboat connectivity to reduce environmental disruption, and targeted support for local communities, especially fishermen and marginalized groups. The Flamingo Festival, a yearly celebration of the island’s unique avian visitors, is expected to draw increased attention to this natural haven.

Beyond infrastructure, the project centers around people: landless families are receiving home plots, housing and utility upgrades are underway, and welfare programs are actively reaching vulnerable residents. At the same time, eco-resort development zones are attracting private investors who see potential in luxury travel that respects nature.

Irakam Island is more than a destination — it’s a vision for India‘s tourism future: one that harmonizes nature, culture, and community. As development advances, Irakam may soon become a global benchmark for how responsible travel can enrich both people and the planet.
