Mauritius Celebrates the Soul of Its Heritage at the 2025 International Creole Festival

From December 5 to 7, 2025, Mauritius will be filled with music, dance, and cultural pride as the island hosts the new edition of the Festival International Kreol — a major event dedicated to celebrating and preserving Mauritian Creole heritage. Under the theme “Otantisite nu kiltir kreol” (“The authenticity of our Creole culture”), the festival highlights the traditions that shape the island’s unique identity in the Indian Ocean.

Supported by the Mauritian Ministry of Tourism and organized with the Association of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs of Mauritius, the festival has become one of the country’s most anticipated cultural gatherings.

A Three-Day Journey Through Creole Culture

December 5 — Mont Choisy (Northwest)
The opening ceremony on the public beach of Mont Choisy sets a welcoming and festive tone, bringing the community together in a vibrant coastal setting.

December 6 — Quatre Bornes & Trou d’Eau Douce
The second day features “Sega tipik”, the island’s traditional dance recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Its rhythms and movements capture the spirit of Creole history and life along the Indian Ocean.

December 7 — Mahébourg Waterfront
The festivities culminate in Mahébourg with a lively “Regat”, combining a culinary showcase and musical performances. It highlights two key elements of Creole identity: gastronomy and the performing arts.

A Celebration of Community and Heritage

The International Creole Festival strengthens local cultural expression, supports Mauritian artists, and helps transmit Creole traditions to younger generations. With the involvement of the hospitality sector, it also enhances the island’s appeal as a cultural destination for visitors seeking authenticity.

With its music, flavors, and warm island spirit, the 2025 Festival International Kreol shows how Mauritius continues to honor, share, and celebrate the richness of its Creole heritage.
