Singapore Stories: Unfolding Art Through Time
The newly revamped DBS Singapore Gallery presents a dynamic and evolving narrative of Singapore’s art history, inviting visitors to explore the diverse pathways and detours taken by artists from the 19th century to today. This exhibition challenges conventional perspectives by asking: Whose story is being told? What defines home? What is the role of art?
Through a rich tapestry of artworks, the exhibition traces how artists have responded to shifting social landscapes, from colonial Malaya to post-independence Singapore. It highlights their engagement with themes of urban transformation, globalization, gender, class, and labor, while also showcasing experimentation with mediums like installation, performance, and video.
By reexamining Singapore’s art history through multiple lenses, the exhibition offers fresh insights into artistic expression and its evolving significance.
The DBS Singapore Gallery will fully reopen in July 2025, continuing its mission to celebrate and rethink Singapore’s artistic heritage.
