Youth-Led Climate Action Across the Indian Ocean: The IOYEC Initiative

The Indian Ocean Youth Ecological Council (IOYEC), launched in 2024 by DIS-MOI, is a pioneering regional initiative mobilizing youth aged 15–30 to lead environmental sustainability efforts across the Indian Ocean. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 13, 14, and 15), IOYEC empowers young leaders to drive climate action, promote ecological awareness, and advocate for sustainable practices within their communities.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Mélanie Valère-Cicéron, the initiative has formed a vibrant network of over 50 youth members from various islands. IOYEC’s key activities include leadership training, eco-education workshops, reforestation and plastic-free campaigns, and collaborative regional projects tackling marine pollution and biodiversity loss.

The Council also engages in policy advocacy, working alongside governments, youth organizations, and international partners to ensure that youth voices shape stronger environmental policies. By fostering inter-island solidarity and empowering the next generation of eco-leaders, IOYEC is laying the foundation for a more resilient and sustainable future in the Indian Ocean region.
