In search of pirates of the Indian Ocean: Ambodifotatra Bay, Sainte-Marie Island, Madagascar

 

 

The east coast of Madagascar was frequented by Europeans from the 16th century. To the Portuguese were added the Dutch followed by the English and the French. They came to trade as part of the slave trade. At the end of the 17th century, a new category of foreigners appeared: pirates. The height of piracy was between the 1680s and 1720s, and the eastern seaboard served as their base of operations.
