Oman : Must-see things to do on Jebel Shams
With its summit reaching 3009 meters above sea level, Jebel Shams, whose name means “mountain of the sun”, is the highest point in the Sultanate of Oman. Located in the north in the Hajar Mountains, it is the ideal place to enjoy a superb sunset or go hiking. It consists of two peaks from which impressive views can be observed; one located to the south of the site is completely accessible to visitors, the other further north is occupied by a military base and has more regulated access. Its magnificent landscapes and its immense gorges often earn it the name of “Grand Canyon of Arabia”; it is in fact the deepest canyon in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world, not far behind the Grand Canyon of Arizona.
