Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape: Preserving Nama Heritage and Biodiversity

The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape, a 160,000-hectare desert region in northwestern South Africa, is a unique communal heritage site reflecting the traditional semi-nomadic pastoral lifestyle of the Nama people. This landscape, managed collectively, sustains seasonal grazing patterns that have existed for nearly two millennia. It is the last region where the Nama continue to build portable rush-mat houses (haru om) and practice transhumant pastoralism, which supports biodiversity and preserves indigenous knowledge.

Recognized for its Outstanding Universal Value, the Richtersveld showcases the harmonious interaction between humans and nature. It meets UNESCO criteria by exemplifying an ancient way of life that remains resilient despite modern challenges. The site is legally protected, with a participatory management plan ensuring the continuity of traditional practices. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining grazing lands and preserving the Nama’s architectural and cultural traditions, reinforcing their role as custodians of this exceptional landscape.
