Tasmanian Aboriginal Culture
Aborigine culture is not limited to images of a boomerang throwing, an aborigine blowing a Didjeridoo or a few paintings selling for millions of dollars in the world’s top galleries. This 50,000 year old culture has a lot to teach us, It is currently assumed that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been in Australia for around 60,000 years. Obviously, this estimate varies quite a bit depending on the degree of conservatism of the historian! It was the European “explorers” and the Malay fishermen before them who discovered their existence first. Their population at the time (when Cook arrived) is estimated at between 300,000 and 500,000 individuals divided into 500 to 700 tribes.
