Tsapiky Festival 2026: Celebrating a Living Heritage in Southern Madagascar

On April 17 and 18, 2026, southern Madagascar — particularly the city of Toliara — hosts the Tsapiky Festival, a major cultural event celebrating one of the country’s most vibrant musical traditions.

Beyond performances and festivities, this year’s edition highlights an essential dimension of tsapiky: its recognition as a subject of study, transmission, and cultural preservation.

A living culture supported by research

Tsapiky is not only performed — it is also studied, analyzed, and passed on. Its inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2025 is not by chance. It is the result of extensive scientific research dedicated to documenting, understanding, and promoting this musical form, which embodies the identity of southwestern Madagascar.

A scientific conference at the heart of the festival

As part of the festival, a scientific conference titled “Tsapiky: Research in the Service of Heritage” will be held, bringing together a panel of experts and researchers. This event aims to shed light on the academic work and knowledge that contributed to the international recognition of tsapiky.

Through discussions and insights, the conference will explore how research plays a key role in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, ensuring that traditions like tsapiky continue to thrive and be transmitted to future generations.

Celebrating identity and transmission

By combining music, performance, and academic reflection, the Tsapiky Festival goes beyond celebration. It becomes a space where culture is not only experienced but also understood, preserved, and shared — highlighting tsapiky as a powerful symbol of identity, memory, and living heritage in Madagascar.
