Yi Peng Lantern Festival — Chiang Mai, Thailand
Yi Peng is one of the most iconic traditions of Lanna culture in Northern Thailand.
Under the full moon, thousands of khom loi lanterns rise into the night sky above Chiang Mai. Their light carries wishes and prayers, while symbolising the act of letting go of misfortune and negativity and welcoming a new beginning.
The celebration also illuminates the streets below. Homes and temples are decorated with colourful lanterns and small Phang Pratheep candles, traditionally lit as an expression of gratitude. Flowers, traditional decorations and ceremonies transform Chiang Mai into a remarkable celebration of light.
Yi Peng offers a unique opportunity to experience the traditions and cultural heritage of the Lanna people, while witnessing one of Thailand’s most enchanting celebrations.
