Indian Ocean Travel by TOURISMER

Australia : Christmas Island

During the rainy season, the island experiences a breeding migration of red crabs which live inside the forests. They migrate to lay their eggs on the seashore, even if they no longer live there. Their annual movement takes place during the rainy season to avoid the heat. These crabs are a protected species — harmless to humans — because they are essential to the life of local forests. During migration, the Christmas population adapts, notably by avoiding certain routes. Every rainy season, the island is invaded by tens of millions of red land crabs
