Taarab : a regional artistic coastal music
Taarab is deeply rooted in the history of the region and is believed to have originated in Zanzibar, off the coast of East Africa. The many influences of this music reflect the different cultures that have passed through this commercial area over the centuries. As a regional artistic expression, taarab integrates Swahili, Arabic and Egyptian cultures. The musicians play specific instruments, which help give the music a unique sound and feeling.
Thus the qanun is a stringed instrument played in the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeastern Europe. It consists of a narrow trapezoidal soundboard.
Nylon or PVC ropes are stretched balanced on fish skins at one end and attached to pegs at the other end. The instrument is placed on the knees and is played by plucking the strings with two picks cut from tortoiseshell. You can also use your fingers.
