The Chalbi Desert, an exhilarating adventure in Kenya
Red sand and dunes fill the horizon. A chain of extinct volcanoes overlooks the basin. The elements reign supreme in this harsh and desert region, where less than 200 mm of precipitation falls per year. Thus appears the Chalbi desert, which calls globetrotters to an off-the-beaten-track trip to northern Kenya. Life overflows in small touches. The cattle guarded by the nomads, the caravan of dromedaries and camels leaving from Kalacha, the oases shaded by palm groves where the Gabra live, this painting reminds you that the desert is not just a deposit of clay and white salt lined with lava flows. On the border with Ethiopia, the Chalbi desert reveals wild Africa in all its forms.
